The 32-year-old, who joined Boro from Norwich three years ago, signed a one-year extension at the Riverside last week and is now preparing for a run of seven games in just 21 days.

"I was obviously very pleased to get it sorted, get it done and concentrate on the football," Howson told the club’s website.

"There's a lot of people to thank who have got me to this position.

"We've got a busy month with games coming thick and fast. Everyone knows the importance of it but at the same time we'll look forward to it."

Many would agree Howson has been one of Boro’s best performers this season, despite him playing in different positions.

The Leeds-born midfielder is thankful for the support he’s received this campaign and praised former Boro boss Jonathan Woodgate for his help.

“There’s a lot of people who have helped me,” Howson added. “The previous manager was a large part of that with playing out of position and the help that he gave me.

“I’d obviously like to say thanks to him and his staff as well.”

Boro youngsters sign pro deals

Howson isn’t the only one to put pen to paper recently, after a quintet of Boro academy graduates signed their first professional contracts.

Daniel Dodds, Harry Green, Jack Hannah, Joe Ridley and Jack Robinson have all taken the next steps in their careers, and academy manager Craig Liddle was has praised their hard work.

“The boys have all deserved this opportunity,” said Liddle

“Signing a professional contract is a big step for a young player, but as we always say, this is where the hard work really starts.

“Yes, the lads have worked very hard to get here, but they must keep doing that and rise to the new challenges that lie ahead.”

Latest COVID-19 Testing

Finally, Boro returned no positive results in the latest round of coronavirus tests.

The EFL announced on Wednesday that 2798 players and club staff from all 24 Championship clubs have been tested over the past week with zero positive tests.
