Ex-Middlesbrough boss tipped to join club's divisional rivals, Cardiff City target discusses transfer choice

Middlesbrough made up some precious ground in the race for the play-off places last weekend, as they powered to a 3-0 win over Stoke City, while fellow contenders for promotion Cardiff City and Bournemouth were both defeated.

Speaking after the big win, Boro boss Neil Warnock insisted: "We had to win today. I said to the players we have to try and get wins on the board now really.

“I thought once we sorted the first ten minutes out where we were getting battered really, we had to change it completely. Once we did that I thought we were on our game.

“I thought we dominated certain areas and broke ever so quickly, even in the second half I thought we broke at pace and could have scored a few more.

Next up, Boro are back in action tomorrow evening, when they take on Preston North End at the Riverside Stadium. The last time the two sides met, Middlesbrough were hammered 3-0 at Deepdale, and will be out for revenge against Alex Neil's side this time around.

Here are today's biggest transfer stories and the latest team news involving Middlesbrough and the rest of the Championship, as the build-up to the upcoming weekend's action begins:
