While some supporters were happy to see their side score four goals at home for the first time since January 2019, others voiced their concerns about Boro’s defensive frailties against League One opponents.

Ashley Fletcher netted a brace while Marvin Johnson and Marcus Tavernier also got on the scoresheet at the Riverside.

Neil Warnock’s side will now turn their attentions to next week’s Championship opener at Watford, which should mark a significant step up in quality.

Here’s how some fans reacted to the Shrewsbury result on social media:

@temps412: Don't know whether to be excited or nervous

@thefootballfly: Really good game to watch. Played some good football. Nice to see the #Boro score a few goals, although dodgy at the back. Well worth a tenner! #UTB

@lynpogue: We've gone out to lower league teams in recent years so it's a bonus, and 4 goals and first home win of the year. New keeper and defence needs sorting though otherwise we'll get thrashed in the Championship by decent teams

@daveyballyXIIII: Ashley Fletcher, could be a massive season for him this season, well done lad

@dikyp_vip: Conceding 3 goals in that fashion against a lower league side scares me. It’s gonna be a topsy turvy season it should be interesting

@Mrll28: Lot of comments made on the defence! But end to end throughout the game and I didn’t get the sense we were in trouble at any point! Shrewsbury gave it their all! Awesome game from my point of view. Bring on Watford

@BraddersMcC: Grant Hall way too sluggish tonight, announce some players

@studdy2k: Announce defenders

@ChelseaPattsMFC: Mixed feelings after this tbh. Pleased to win of course. But we've conceded three...to Shrewsbury.....at home.

@laurenRK1988: Enjoyable watch! Great team performance, plenty of confidence going into the first league game!

@Sm0ggs: Defence and keeper situation needs addressing ASAP.

@officialandyb24: Fletcher will be some player this season
