Fuming Charlton boss slams 'points-per-game' solution if Championship doesn't restart as Middlesbrough wait on key decision

Middlesbrough’s relegation rivals are third bottom with just two points separating them and Boro in 19th.

The Premier League and EFL hope to be able to complete their respective seasons next month and those hopes were raised by the Government announcement on Monday that competitive sport could return behind-closed-doors from June 1.

But that is still far from certain and a possible solution should the football season not restart is using a points-per-game formula, which would see Charlton finish third-bottom and drop back into League One, with Boro narrowly avoiding the drop.

Bowyer has slammed that possible solution in an interview with Sky Sports.

The Charlton boss said: “It would kill our football club.

“We would struggle. I don’t know the extent but it would be bad. We’re not in a great position anyway.

“There is meant to be a meeting later in the week with the managers and hopefully someone from the EFL, and I’ll be saying to them what I’m saying to you.

“To be called as it stands today would be scandalous. It would be wrong on every level.

“For us as a club it wouldn’t be acceptable. We’ve only been in the relegation zone for six days for the whole season.

“If they had called it the week before, it would have been Middlesbrough in the bottom three.

“If they have to call it a day the fairest way would be halfway through the season so you’re judging it when everyone has played each other once.”

Bowyer added: “I’ve got players out of contract on June 30 and they won’t play after that, I know that,” he stated.

“We have nine players and six loan players, 15 in total who could just say ‘I’m done’.

“It’s hard, and not just for us but other clubs. We’ve got Lyle Taylor and his contract finishes on June 30.”

All football has been suspended since March but there remains hope it could re-start next month when safe to do so.
