Genk & Belgium star Jelle Vossen would love to return to Middlesbrough

The Belgian international has returned to Genk after his year-long loan spell at Teesside culminated in the 2-0 Championship play-off final loss to Norwich City.

Scorer of nine goals for Boro, the forward will consider his options over the coming weeks with a return to the Riverside a favoured destination.

“I’ve loved my year at Middlesbrough,” said Vossen, who gets married today.

“It’s everyone’s dream to play in England and I’ve had an amazing year. I’d love to come back, but it’s not all up to me.

“We will meet again, (but) I don’t know when that will be.

“It’s been really nice and an amazing season and I’m able to leave all options open.

“We will have to discuss and we will see in a couple of weeks what’s going to happen. I don’t want to say at the moment.”

Vossen endeared himself to the Boro faithful before he even landed in the region, with the Twitter hashtag #FreeJelleVossen used as a ploy by supporters to persuade his parent club to loan him to Boro after a lengthy pursuit.

Riverside boss Aitor Karanka can exercise an option to acquire the 26-year-old permanently and though he has opted to start him in the majority of games, he could still have reservations about the striker’s frequency in finding the net.

Regardless if Vossen stays or doesn’t, he insists that Boro “improve and do even better next year, that’s the only way to look forward”.

He added: “It (the defeat) was a big disappointment for all of us. We have to be a winning side next season and we know what to do.”

l Liverpool have reportedly had a £10million bid for Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne rejected, though they are expected to improve the initial bid for the 24-year-old.

Liverpool are also keen to land Manchester City midfielder James Milner and Burnley striker Danny Ings.
