The 22-year-old centre-back joined Boro on loan from French club St-Etienne in January and had agreed to stay at the Riverside until the end of the season after the deal expired in June.

Yet the Cameroon international wasn’t in the matchday squad for Middlesbrough’s 3-1 defeat by Bristol City on Saturday, and has since posted the following message on Instagram.

"Thank you for these 6 months Boro, you are amazing supporters. I had to go back in France. All the Best for the end of the season, UTB.”

Former Boro boss Jonathan Woodgate was a big fan of Moukoudi and wanted to sign the defender permanently.

Yet that now seems unlikely, especially as the centre-back wouldn’t come cheap and has attracted interest across Europe.

Moukoudi’s last appearance came during last weekend’s 1-0 defeat by QPR when he started in midfield.
