Hartlepool Utd’s Middlesbrough loanee Ryan Brobbel scores for Northern Ireland U21

The 21-year-old played the full 90 minutes in the UEFA European U21 Championship Qualifier against Serbia, a game Northern Ireland lost 4-1.

But the Hartlepool-born winger did manage to get on the score sheet at Shamrock Park, in Portadown, scoring a consolation goal in the 67th minute.

It has been a miserable qualifying campaign for Jim Magilton’s Under-21 side, who finished bottom of their group after losing seven out of their eight qualifying matches.

As a result Magilton’s men won’t be taking part in the championships in the Czech Republic.

But Brobbel’s goal did, at least, cap a good week for the on-loan Middlesbrough man, who this week extended his spell at Hartlepool United for a further four weeks.

Highly rated Brobbel has been in sparkling form since arriving at Victoria Park, and helped Colin Cooper’s side to their first win on home soil this season on Saturday against Shrewsbury Town.

Pacy Brobbel, who was denied two clear penalties in the 2-0 win over Micky Mellon’s Shrews side, flew out to Belfast on Sunday morning to meet up with his international colleagues ahead of last night’s game.

The set piece specialist has been in impressive form since arriving at his home town side, playing in seven matches.

Versatile Brobbel can play on either the left or the right flank and the new loan deal will see him remain with Pools until after the game at Exeter City on Saturday, October 11.
