“He was a complete pro,” said Warnock when discussing Friend’s influence. “There is usually one at every club but he was special to help us stay up.

“It wasn’t just on the field of play but during the week he helped me and filled me in on a lot of information that I needed to get the team selection right, I’ve got nothing but good things to say about him.

“Adam Clayton as well, Clats didn’t play many games for me but was incredible on the training ground for me so I’ve got nothing but praise for them.”

On Friend’s contract situation, Warnock added: “We offered him a 12-month deal which we felt was right at that time. Good luck to him, I think he’s got a two-year with a year option so you can’t blame him.

“I think some of his family come from down there as well so it was probably the right time to make the move.”
