Clubs can benefit financially if their players are called up to the tournament through the FIFA Club Benefits Programme, where they are handed a share of a cash payout.

Unfortunately for Boro duo Paddy McNair and George Saville, Northern Ireland were beaten in the play-offs for Euro 2020 and won’t feature in the competition.

UEFA estimates suggest the figure heading to Boro thanks to the duo may be around £74,000 – although many of these payments were fast-tracked in April of last year to help clubs during the COVID-enforced break.

McNair and Saville featured in Northern Ireland’s recent friendly fixtures against Malta and Ukraine, and are likely to be called up for the next round of World Cup qualifiers in September.

There are five former Boro players who will be at Euro 2020.

Marten de Roon will be hoping to add to his 23 caps for The Netherlands, who will face Ukraine, North Macedonia and Austria in the group stages.

Defender Tomas Kalas is likely to face England for the Czech Republic in Group D, and former Boro loanee Connor Roberts looks set to feature for Wales.

Of course, there is also former Boro boss Gareth Southgate.
