'I don't want to be disrespectful': Leeds United star makes strong Middlesbrough claim

Leeds United star Mateusz Klich has revealed that he turned down a move to Middlesbrough – because he ‘knew they were going down.’

The Polish international has become a key player at Elland Road having flourished under Marcelo Bielsa, but it could have been a very different story had he agreed to head to the Riverside Stadium.

Klich was offered the chance to join Boro when they were still a Premier League side, but rejected the move as he felt he would be in a relegation battle.

But when Leeds came calling in 2017, he didn’t require a similar though – particularly given that he felt Leeds were a ‘bigger club’.

“My agent called me and said he had an offer from Middlesbrough, because Victor Orta was with them at the time. I was at FC Twente and I said if I get an offer from England we should consider it, but then the plan changed,” said Klich, speaking to the Whites’ official website.

"I ended up getting an offer from Leeds United [after Orta arrived] and I was happier. Obviously (Boro) were a Premier League team at the time, but you knew they were going down.

“I don't want to be disrespectful to them, but Leeds is a bigger club. After that, I agreed everything quickly."

Klich scored against Boro earlier this season, in a result which helped Leeds climb further towards a return to the Premier League.
