The 19-year-old frontman made his Championship debut against Blackburn in August and has made seven appearances in the second tier this term.

Yet the loan arrival of Lukas Nmecha from Manchester City and Rudy Gestede’s return from injury has seen Walker fall down the pecking order at the Riverside.

Crewe are fighting for promotion from League Two and are 3rd in the table after 29 games.

Boro head coach Jonathan Woodgate told the club’s website: “This is a good opportunity for Stephen to go out, play some games, and gain more experience at a competitive level.

“We see Crewe as a good fit for Stephen at this stage. He has a big future ahead of him, but knows he needs to work hard, and this is a good move for him at this time.”
