Boro took an early lead after an own goal from Bees goalkeeper David Raya and had chances to go back ahead after Ivan Toney equalised seven minutes before half-time.

New signings Yannick Bolasie and Neeskens Kebano, who arrived from Everton and Fulham respectively, also impressed for Neil Warnock’s side.

Here’s how some fans reacted to the result on social media:

@OurMFC: Well an utterly disappointing scoreline, one that doesn’t do us any justice. However, the clear difference was our ability to take the chances we had, Brentford were clinical. Bolasie was excellent though and some more minutes in the tank. Onto Derby now

@boro_alex2: Yannick Bolasie is gonna be an absolute joy to watch

@Jordanwalker280: Bolasie looks like he can create. Kebano will be very good when he settles in next few games

@CommunityWinger: Kebano and Bolasie. What a pair of signings they are

@tom_mcgarry17: Tough one to take and the scoreline does not reflect the balance of the game. However, we need to start taking our chances if we want any chance of making the top six

@Matt_Rowney: Outclassed and well beaten. I'll be shocked if they don't get promoted. Glad Brentford and Norwich are out the way. Let's keep getting the new lads fit and move onto the next one.

@jackshuttlewor4: What a weird game, we had way more good chances throughout and got battered, not clinical enough
