Middlesbrough hung onto a slender 1-0 lead to beat Luton at the Riverside on Wednesday – and there were plenty of talking points after the match.

Boro striker Chuba Akpom scored the only goal of the game shortly after half-time, before the hosts saw Sam Morsy sent off for handball in the 66th minute.

The decision to dismiss the Egyptian midfielder looked extremely harsh, yet Boro’s misery was compounded when referee Andy Davies awarded a penalty.

When taking the spot kick, Luton striker James Collins slipped and double-kicked the ball, similar to Marcus Tavernier’s penalty which was ruled out against Norwich earlier this season.

It appeared the referee was going to give the goal, before consulting with linesman Akil Howson.

Here’s how some fans reacted to the big taking points on social media:

@AndrewBryantuk: What a solid performance from the lads, makes the 3 points feel huge when your down to 10 men and hang on UTB

@jose_Hammill: Miss those last 20 mental minutes in the stadium in tight games like these.

@JasonHolliday_: Appeal that Red Card

@tom_mcgarry17: GET IN!!! Superb game management after going a man down, boy that was a long seven minutes Surely that red card will be rescinded?

@andymacca8: Dael Fry and George Saville were immense

@Smithy_MFC84: Flirting with the top six has given us something to cheer, after last season’s fling with the bottom three it’s a refreshing change. But let’s face it, we’ll likely fall short, yet that’s ok for me. I’m just happy we have a team we can be proud of again.

@wanaldinho: Brilliant from the lads tonight. Was never a red card for Morsy, he slipped over. Fry was fantastic tonight but Saville gets the man of the match from me. Well done to the players surrounding the ref too, their goal would have stood otherwise.

@MFC_Brad: Justice for the Norwich penalty.

@Dannychapman17: Riverside is becoming the fortress we know it can be. Wish fans could be back, would love to see it rocking for Warnock and this team. What a result... massive 3 points

@DannyGuitar91: Big win this given the bizarre penalty and sending off
