The 25-year-old was a regular for Boro last season when he made 40 Championship appearances and scored seven goals .

Yet Wing has made just two starts since Warnock took charge at the Riverside in June, both in the Carabao Cup, and has only played 12 minutes in the league so far this term.

The form of Boro’s midfield trio, Jonny Howson, George Saville and Sam Morsy, has also made it harder for Wing to break back into the side.

“I felt sorry for Lewis because he’s not been able to smash the door down if I’m honest,” said Warnock when asked about the midfielder.

“Although he’s been in the squad I have just felt there have been other people playing better.

“On the training ground Hayden Coulson is another one really. They are training well trying to show me what they can do.

“It’s difficult when the window is closed because they can’t be asking to leave or anything like that.

“We are glad to have them, we only have 18 so there will be opportunities for everyone I think.”

Warnock did hint he may make changes ahead of Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Coventry and made three alterations to his starting XI.

Marvin Johnson and Marc Bola dropped to the bench while Chuba Akpom missed out through illness.
