Middlesbrough and Leeds United suffer blow in pursuit of 20-goal striker target

Boro have been long-term admirers of Cosgrove, who has netted 20 times this season for the Dons and is attracting interest from a host of Championship sides.

But reports north of the border claim that Aberdeen are reluctant to part with their star man, and are keen to dismiss any bids that may come their way.

A £4million asking price has been placed on Cosgrove’s head, but a number of second tier sides are still expected to make formal bids for the striker when the January transfer window opens.

Jonathan Woodgate’s side have also been linked with a move for winger Jack Clarke in January - and could have seen their hopes boosted after it was confirmed the winger will prematurely end his loan spell at Leeds United.

Clarke swapped Elland Road for Tottenham Hotspur in the summer before being loaned back to the Whites, but has struggled for game time.

And he has now been recalled by Spurs ahead of a potential loan exit in January – with Boro one of a number of sides believed to be keen.

After the news was confirmed, Clarke took to Twitter to react.

“Was always a dream of mine too play for @LUFC a dream I managed to fulfil and I will be forever thankful for,” he posted.

“I would like to thank the club, staff and all the players I’ve learnt from and got to know over the years.”
