Middlesbrough announce contract boost as youngsters depart

Middlesbrough have confirmed that first-team quartet Adam Clayton, George Friend, Marvin Johnson, and Ryan Shotton have all signed short-term deals to complete the 2019/20 season.

All four players will see their current contracts expire on June 30 but will be allowed to play Boro’s final seven games in July due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Rudy Gestede and Daniel Ayala were also out of contract this summer but have left the club after electing not to sign short-term deals.

Boro have also confirmed that several young players have left the club after releasing their end-of-season retained list.

Mitchell Curry, Nathan Dale, Enes Mahmutovic, Layton Watts, and Stephen Wearne will all depart, along with third-year scholar Nick Hood, and second-years Harold Essien, Harry Flatters, Isaac Fletcher, and Andrew Wilson.
