Middlesbrough’s first-team coach Ronnie Jepson says he couldn’t fault the players’ attitude during Tuesday’s Carabao Cup defeat by Barnsley – even if the performance was disappointing.

Boro made several changes following their league game against Watford on Friday, with manager Neil Warnock keen to look at some of his fringe and younger players.

Nathan Wood, Marc Bola, Dael Fry, Marcus Browne, Hayden Coulson and Lewis Wing all came into the side, while Sam Morsy made his debut.

Yet first-half goals from Patrick Schmidt and Jordan Williams saw Barnsley progress to the third round of the competition, setting up a trip to Chelsea next week.

“It was a disappointing first half in terms of performance but the work ethic was good,” said Jepson after the match.

“Quite a few players were playing together for the first time. It was a good opportunity for our gaffer to see the lads and try and get one or two up to speed.

“Sam Morsy coming in, he's only played 70 minutes in the last couple of weeks so it was good to get him in.

“So overall it was positive and I thought in the second half we grew into it a little bit and got on the front foot.

“The main aim was to give people minutes and give everyone a chance.”

Boro are still hopeful they can sign more players before the end of the transfer window, yet it’s clear there are still places up for grabs in a thin squad.

“I don't know where we are in the transfer market, it's not for me to comment on that,” added Jepson.

“The gaffer is working on that with the powers that be.

“We'll always strive to get better players. But I've got to say, the younger lads who are in and around it have shown a great attitude.

“Whether they're ready yet is another question, you know how tough the Championship is and the squad you need, especially after the international break when the games come thick and fast.

“Then you don't get much chance in terms of coaching, it's all about recovery, so you need to be tested and tested.”
