Ahead of Saturday’s trip to relegation rivals Charlton, Woodgate was asked what it’s like to have a chairman like Gibson.

“It’s absolutely fantastic,” the Boro boss replied. “I know my chairman, a lot of managers don’t know their chairman.

“To have that backing was absolutely fantastic, whether people agree with it he’s the chairman of the football club and he’s an absolutely fantastic chairman.

“He’s been very loyal to me in the situation I’ve been in, my first managerial role you need the right chairman in charge and that’s the one thing a lot of managers have said is that you need to have the right chairman when it’s your first job.

“I’ve got that, I’m very lucky to have a chairman who’s so passionate about the club and who, from 1986, has ploughed money into this football club, got it to a European Cup final, it’s fantastic what he’s done and I was really pleased to get that backing.

“But what I don’t do is take that backing for granted, that’s one thing I don’t do.”
