Middlesbrough are close to a transfer breakthrough with Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli heading to the Riverside.

The 28-year-old 6ft 4ins keeper is understood to be taking a medical today ahead of a season-long loan move, boosting Neil Warnock’s options between the sticks.

It has been an area Warnock has been keen to bolster and Boro are now close to landing their man.

Experienced Bettinelli has played more than 100 games for Fulham.

If the deal is concluded swiftly, as expected, then he could go straight into the Boro side for the opening game of the Championship season away at Watford on Friday evening. Tomas Mejias is expected to leave the club.

Warnock will hope for improvements from his Boro side when they travel to Watford.

"It will be a bit different at Watford, their front three is really good,” Warnock added. “We'll have to defend better than that.

“These three weeks have been really intense. At least now we can have a few days off and get on certain tactical things next week.

“The lads have enjoyed pre-season, they've given me everything. There was no lack of effort. The ability was very good. One or two disappointing aspects but you're going to get that at this stage,” added the Boro boss.

Warnock said on Thursday he was hopeful he could bring in another signing before the Watford game but wouldn’t be drawn on transfers after the match.
