Middlesbrough confirm one positive Covid-19 test after latest round of Championship testing

Middlesbrough have confirmed they have had one positive test from the latest round of Covid-19 testing of players and staff in the Championship.

The Championship is aiming to restart from around June 20 with clubs back in training, following strict guidelines from the EFL regards training, washing equipment and restricted access to buildings.

The individual has not been named by Boro and they will now self-isolate.

An EFL statement read: “Following the latest round of COVID-19 testing, the EFL can confirm that 1,058 players and club staff from the 24 Championship clubs were tested over the course of Thursday 28 May and Friday 29 May, with 10 individuals testing positive from eight clubs.

“Those players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate in line with the guidelines provided by the EFL and only those who have tested negative will be permitted to enter training ground facilities.”

Boro later confirmed they were one of the clubs to have a positive test.

A statement read: “Middlesbrough FC can confirm that we have had one positive test from the latest round of COVID-19 testing.

“The individual concerned is now self-isolating in accordance with the guidelines provided by the EFL.”

There is no testing programme underway in League One, with clubs to vote a week on Monday on whether to curtail or resume the season.

Regards League Two, the EFL statement added: “Following an initial round of COVID-19 testing, the EFL can confirm that 135 players and club staff were tested from four League Two clubs over the course of Thursday 28 May and Friday 29 May, with seven individuals testing positive from three clubs.

“Those players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate in line with the guidelines provided by the EFL and only those who have tested negative will be permitted to enter training ground facilities.”

The EFL clubs meet on June 8 to confirm plans for each division with the Championship set to play on, League Two expected to curtail and League One clubs currently divided.
