Any departure for Shotton would represent another blow for Boro, who already look set to see their defensive ranks depleted this summer.
Centre back Daniel Ayala is out of contract in the summer, with Leeds United admirers of the Spaniard, while club captain George Friend also sees his current terms expire on June 30.
Harold Moukoudi, a January addition from St Etienne, is set to depart in the summer when his loan deal expires – but manager Jonathan Woodgate has already hinted that he could investigate a permanent move for the Frenchman once the Championship season is completed.
