Middlesbrough defender Ryan Shotton emerges as a surprise target for European giants

The full-back is out of contract at the Riverside Stadium this summer, and is yet to hold talks over fresh terms given the current uncertainty in the footballing world.

And Turkish newspaper Takvim claim that Besiktas are set to make a move for the 31-year-old, having been impressed with his versatility

The Istanbul-based side are braced to see Croatian international Domagoj Vida depart this summer and it is claimed that Shotton would be his direct replacement, and a more cost-effective solution than other potential targets.

Any departure for Shotton would represent another blow for Boro, who already look set to see their defensive ranks depleted this summer.

Centre back Daniel Ayala is out of contract in the summer, with Leeds United admirers of the Spaniard, while club captain George Friend also sees his current terms expire on June 30.

Harold Moukoudi, a January addition from St Etienne, is set to depart in the summer when his loan deal expires – but manager Jonathan Woodgate has already hinted that he could investigate a permanent move for the Frenchman once the Championship season is completed.

It is understood that Ayala, Shotton and Friend are all set to remain at the Riverside Stadium until the 2019/20 season comes to a conclusion, with Boro stepping-up their preparations this week ahead of a June 20 restart.
