Middlesbrough fans question Jonathan Woodgate's second-half tactics after Hull City draw

Middlesbrough may have moved out of the Championship relegation zone following a 2-2 draw with Hull City at the Riverside, yet the result felt like a big opportunity missed.

After first-half goals from Marcus Tavernier and Ashley Fletcher, Boro winger Marvin Johnson was sent off before half-time – a reckless tackle which changed the course of the game.

Hull came back in the second half after two goals from Jarrod Bowen, but while many supporters blamed Johnson for the result, Jonathan Woodgate’s second-half tactics were also questioned.

Here’s how some Boro fans reacted on social media after the game:

@Smithy_MFC84: Honestly felt sorry for Britt today. The substitution killed his game completely. Isolated more than ever. Extremely frustrating, and for him too I’m sure, especially after he was on fire in that first half

@heyjoshuajames: Woodgate can’t blame Johnson solely for messing another game up, yes it contributed but bringing on Clayton and hoping for a shut out by parking a bus full of players that can’t park a bus was always going to backfire. Poor.

@George98Mills: Johnson at fault but dunno how Woodgate can explain Tav LWB with Coulson and Bola on the bench.

@karlbenwatson: Absolutely cannot fault the work rate and effort from the 10 men but that one is tough to take. In control and then one mad individual mistake has cost us. Take the positives and move on #Boro #UTB

@AdamStyle93: Johnson for making the challenge, and Woodgate for not been able to adapt to the pressure of Hull attacking and making the wrong sub. That’s just my opinion.

@lynpogue: What kind of message mentally is Woodgate sending out to his players to just defend for 45mins?All the confidence the team had pre sending off has evaporated! Should have been able to see the game out at 2.0 with 10 men. It just invited Hull to attack for 45mins

@NathanRonaldFa1: Without the sending off we'd have won that game 4 or 5 nil, behave telling people to get a grip for showing support and not just complaining 24/7, really don't understand why woodgate is the one getting all the stick today, Johnson cost us that game, no one else

@OOTfirebobby: Poor decision again from Woodgate. We made Hull look like Real Madrid. I like Clayton but we were still doing ok with Fletcher & Britt as outlets. We invited pressure, almost lost the game. 1 point at home, against a poor side, Woodgate needs to go or get some serious help in.

@tommy_g88: Gutted the Johnson tackle cost us the game. We were absolutely cruising until then. Was no need to make such as silly tackle

@FerretSqueaks: Yes Johnson deserves some stick for what he did...but you also cannot excuse Woodgate for poor tactics after we went down to 10...or the rest of the players for trying to camp in their own penalty area for most of the 2nd half.
