And Fjortoft, who now works as a pundit for Norwegian TV, recently posted a letter he received from Gibson on social media.

It read: “Dear Jan, I was away when your transfer to Sheffield United was completed and therefore did not have the opportunity to speak to you on behalf of the club.

"I would like to thank you for your conduct both on and off the field during your time at Middlesbrough. You were an example to our younger players and our fans.

"Thank you for your contributions to Middlesbrough Football Club during your time here. We are all delighted at the success you are enjoying at Sheffield United. Both you and your family will always be welcome at the Riverside.

"Yours sincerely, Steve Gibson."

Middlesbrough FIFA player Danny Taylor will play his second-round match in the Ultimate Quaran-team cup tonight.

The virtual tournament was set-up by Leyton Orient's media team after the regular football season was suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Taylor is Boro’s representative in the event after replacing striker Lukas Nmecha last week.

Boro progressed to the second round of the 128-team event with a 3-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Monday, setting up a second-round clash against Walsall tonight (7pm kick-off).

Boro are now the joint favourites to win the event and can be backed at 5/1, along with French club Nantes, on SkyBet.

Fans can follow and watch the game via a link on Boro’s Twitter account.

Orient have set-up a JustGiving page. Money raised will go towards helping cash-strapped EFL clubs as well as the MIND charity and research into Covid-19.

A club statement added: “We ask you to join us in a fundraising campaign that could have some real-world consequences.”
