The 27-year-old is a free agent after leaving Toulouse at the end of last season and did hold talks with Boro about a potential move to the Riverside.

It was reported earlier this week that Sanogo was set to have a medical at Rockliffe, yet it’s now been claimed the deal has fallen through due to concerns over the striker's fitness.

Boro boss Neil Warnock said last week he wanted to sign two more strikers before the end of the transfer window, but has been impressed by the form of new club captain Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher.

Boro close in on Morsy deal

One player Boro are still hopeful of signing is Wigan midfielder Sam Morsy, who is expected to become the Teessiders’ third signing of the summer.

The 29-year-old Egyptian was left out of Wigan’s squad for their Carabao Cup tie against Fleetwood last week, and had multiple offers from Championship clubs.

Yet according to Sky Sports and local reports from Wigan, a fee has been agreed between Boro and the Latics.

Wigan's caretaker boss Leam Richardson recently told our sister title Wigan Today: "Sammy Morsy is as professional a person as you'll find within football.

"What will be for Sam will be - and that goes for every single player - because we can't control that for the minute.

"Personally, I am surprised he's still here, but we'll see, we'll watch this space."

Mejias’ message to Boro fans

Mejias, who returned to the club last summer, took to Twitter to thank Boro fans for their support.

“So many memories, moments and achievements through this years wearing proudly Middlesbrough shirt.” the Spaniard posted.

“All I have for you is gratitude and respect. Time to say goodbye. time to support you anywhere I'm gonna be.

“But always Up The Boro.”
