Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony has rubbished reports that Middlesbrough made a £350,000 bid for playmaker Marcus Maddison.

Boro have been linked with Maddison for some time, with the 26-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Posh’s director of football Barry Fry recently said some clubs had made ‘cheeky bids’ for the attacking midfielder, yet none had met the player’s £2.5million release clause.

That was followed by a report from TeamTalk which claimed Peterborough laughed off an offer from the Teessiders for Maddison.

But when the story was put to MacAnthony on Twitter, the Posh chairman replied saying: “To be fair, that story is not true.”

When asked about Boro’s reported interest in Maddison by another supporter, MacAnthony tweeted: “No bid. Middsboro wouldn’t make an offer like that to be fair.”

Derby, Bristol City, West Brom and Sunderland are among the clubs which have also been credited with interest in Maddison.

The 20-year-old defender is yet to make a senior appearance at Molineux, yet reports have claimed Premier League clubs Leicester and Crystal Palace are also interested.

But John, who signed a season-long loan deal at League One side Doncaster in the summer, says he’s not looking too far ahead.

“I don’t take any notice,” John told Express & Star when asked about recent speculation.

“Personally, that’s nothing for me to get involved with. I’m just here to play football at the end of the day so I can’t be worrying about outside noise.

“I’ve just got to focus on my performances on the pitch. I’ve heard about it, people have told me, and it’s nice to hear.

“But in the present I’m here to play games, to play football and hopefully I just keep performing well.

“Whatever happens in January or in the summer, that’s what happens but I’m here for the season so I’m just looking forward to that and hopefully just doing well here.”
