Middlesbrough were just one of the clubs credited with interest in the 23-year-old who has scored 14 goals in League One this season.

MacAnthony, who regularly answers questions on his Twitter account, was recently asked if there was any truth in the Boro reports, to which he replied: “They love him that’s for sure. But sometimes what you love isn’t what you can afford.”

It’s also been claimed that Derby were tracking Toney and that Charlton had a £4million bid rejected for the frontman.

And ahead of the upcoming January transfer window, MacAnthony was asked if the striker wanted to leave in the summer.

The Posh chairman replied: “No. But deadline day obviously peaked his interest but he’s a professional & never given us an issue.”

Eddie Nketiah on the move

Another player who was linked with Boro over the summer is Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah.

Instead, the 20-year-old prospect made a loan switch to Leeds United, but has made just one start for Marcelo Bielsa’s side since the start of the campaign.

Various reports have claimed Arsenal are ready to recall Nketiah due to his lack of game time, a move which would interest several Championship clubs.

According to Bristol Live, Bristol City are at the front of the queue to sign the striker, while Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday are also interested.
