After a goalless first half, the Championship’s top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic headed Fulham ahead from a free-kick in the 73rd minute.
Boro had chances to draw level in the closing stages, yet neither substitute Josh Coburn or Duncan Watmore could hit the target.
The result means Boro have dropped out of the Championship play-off places, yet they do have a game in hand on some of the sides above them.
Here’s how each player fared for Chris Wilder’s team at the Riverside:
5. Lee Peltier - 6
Was deployed in a right wing-back role and saw out his defensive duties. Replaced on the hour mark as the team looked to get on the front foot. 6 Photo: Alex Pantling
6. Neil Taylor - 6
Stood his ground defensively against Fulham playmaker Harry Wilson. Made some loose passes when Boro had opportunities to attack and was replaced early in the second half. 6 Photo: Getty Images
7. Jonny Howson - 7
Unfortunate to be on the losing side. Regularly plugged gaps in front of Boro’s defence and recycled possession well. 7 Photo: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA
8. Matt Crooks - 6
Almost scored after making a late run into the Fulham box five minutes before half-time. Looked to stretch the opposition’s defence from midfield but it didn’t quite drop for him. 6 Photo: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA
