The 32-year-old, who has made 35 Championship appearances this season, has penned a new deal at the Riverside until June 30, 2021 following weeks of uncertainty regarding his future.

Howson has been one of the Teessiders’ best players this campaign, and former Boro boss Jonathan Woodgate was confident the player would sign a new deal before football was suspended in March.

Woodgate repeatedly praised Howson earlier this season, while new boss Neil Warnock has also complimented the midfielder.

Howson came through the academy at Leeds United and was a regular starter at Elland Road before moving to Norwich City in 2012.

The midfielder spent five years with Canaries and helped them win promotion to the Premier League in 2015.

Howson joined Boro two years later when Garry Monk was in charge at the Riverside.
