Boro appear well stocked on the left side of defence with Marvin Johnson, Marc Bola and Hayden Coulson all natural options at wing-back.

Yet the Teessiders were linked with Chelsea left-back Baba Rahman earlier this week, with Goal.com claiming Boro and Watford have made loan offers.

Rahman joined Chelsea in 2015 but has been loaned out to Schalke 04 in Germany, French club Reims and Spanish outfit Mallorca during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Even so, a report has claimed the Teessiders are keeping tabs on Barnsley midfielder Alex Mowatt, with Football League World also crediting QPR and Cardiff with interest.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Tykes from Leeds in 2017, has less than a year left on his contract at Oakwell.

Yaya Sanogo still searching for a new club

One player who Boro were in talks with was striker Yaya Sanogo, who remains a free agent after leaving French club Toulouse.

Boro pulled the plug on the deal due to fitness concerns yet, according to French outlet Foot Mercato, the striker has received several proposals and been offered a contract by Ligue 1 club Dijon.
