Warnock took charge at the Riverside with eight games to go, replacing Jonathan Woodgate in the dugout and despite a few nervy moments managed to successfully retain the club’s Championship status.

Now that his appointment has been confirmed, Warnock is now planning for next season after first enjoying a short break.

It follows a meeting with Boro owner Steve Gibson last week after the final game of the season, a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Goals from Paddy McNair and Britt Assombalonga’s stoppage-time winner meant Boro finished 18th in the table, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Warnock said: “I’ve really enjoyed myself since I’ve come up here.

“The people in the area have made me and my family really welcome.

“It’s been hard work, make no mistake. But this is a great club, and I’d like to take it towards the other end of the table.

“I just felt it was the right thing to do, to continue to shape the squad and take it forward. That’s what I’m going to try and do.”

The Boro manager revealed that positive discussions with chairman Steve Gibson offered further encouragement to continue at the helm and the experienced Warnock has already identified areas to strengthen with the Boro squad set to be reshaped this summer ahead of the new campaign kicking off on September 12.
