Yet Black Cats legend Kevin Phillips believes the chance to work with manager Neil Warnock will be good for Watmore.

“I had almost forgotten about him. I think everybody had.” Phillips told Football Insider when asked about Watmore.

“We were talking about this young rising star a long time ago but he suffered badly with injuries, confidence and issues off the pitch as well.

“For Watmore’s career, to move to a club in the North East and play under a manager like Neil Warnock is great.

Boro boss on five substitutes rule

Championship clubs will now be able to make five substitutes per match and name nine players on their bench following an EFL rule change.

The switch is to help clubs deal with congested fixture schedules, caused by the coronavirus pandemic, and reduce injuries over a busy period.

Yet Warnock doesn’t think the alteration will necessarily help his team, who have one of the smallest Championship squads and only named six subs against Brentford last time out.

"You talk about your nine subs, well we didn't vote for that because we only had six last week,” Warnock told TalkSport.

"It's only clubs like Norwich or (Nottingham) Forest who have 30 odd players, it will only help them, it won't help clubs like ourselves.
