Neil Warnock delivers verdict on 'chaotic' Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic situations ahead of Middlesbrough's trip to Hillsborough

Neil Warnock says Middlesbrough still need another point to secure their Championship status due to the chaotic situations at Wigan Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday.

The Latics, who are 13th in the table, are set to be hit by a 12-point penalty for going into administration, yet the decision has been appealed.

If the points deduction stands, Boro can’t be relegated from the second tier, yet a verdict on Wigan’s sanction won’t come until after the season has finished.

Boro will travel to Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday evening, another club who could be deducted points for financial irregularities which relates to the sale of Hillsborough Stadium.

When asked about the situation ahead of Boro’s meeting with the Owls, Warnock said: “We’ve always said we need another point, it’s a bit chaotic the situation surrounding Wigan and Sheffield Wednesday and it’s one of those things we should know what we are up against.

“It doesn’t appear that will happen before the game. I just think at the level that we are talking about it’s wrong that it’s not decided already, one way or the other so that the clubs and the league can get on with it.

“It’s not just Wigan but Sheffield Wednesday as well. It’s very difficult for the managers concerned as well, the clubs concerned and everyone else down at the bottom end.

“For me things like that should be clarified before the last game of the season but it is what it is so we have to just carry on.”

Warnock is expecting a tough game against Wednesday who are managed by former Boro boss Garry Monk.

The Owls were beaten 5-3 by Fulham last time out but thumped Boro 4-1 at the Riverside earlier in the season.

“It’ll be a tough game,” added Warnock. “We know how Garry has done at Sheffield, he's got some good players but we’ve just got to try and concentrate on ourselves.

“Every game is tough, there are about 11 games (in the Championship) with something riding on it so it’s tough for everyone this last game of the season.”
