Warnock spoke to Roberts before Boro’s 2-1 win over Barnsley a week ago and said the player was looking forward to the move.
Boro’s club statement claimed the 23-year-old was again attracting interest from a number of clubs while he was surplus to requirements at City.
Warnock told the club’s website: “I’m really pleased we’ve been able to get him because I felt we needed that bit of something different,” said the Boro boss.
