Watmore joined Boro on a short-term contract until mid-January and has scored four goals in six appearances since moving to Teesside.

Two of those came in Boro’s 3-0 win over Millwall at the Riverside, with all three goals coming inside the opening 20 minutes.

Marcus Tavernier also got on the scoresheet, while Warnock was quick to praise midfielders Sam Morsy and George Saville, as well as centre-backs Paddy McNair and Dael Fry after the win.

“I was a bit worried today how we would start the game so we concentrated on trying to get a quick start,” said Warnock, whose side had suffered back-to-back defeats at Stoke and Preston. “I didn’t think in my wildest dreams it would be that quick.

“I think if the younger lads make mistakes early doors they might not be as free and I thought the way to get a result was to play one touch sometimes, playing quickly in their half.

“I thought we really pressured them well, the two midfield lads were outstanding today, Sam and Sav, the two centre-backs, Dael and Paddy.

“I was pleased second half that we kept a clean sheet as well

The Boro boss added: “We could have scored more. Duncan took his goals well. The second goal is a typical poacher’s goal, it’s a shot from Sav and he’s in the right place. Good luck to him, he’s a super lad to work with.”

"Somebody said he’s scored more goals than Gestede in the whole time he was here, I can say that because he’s not in this country anymore.”

Warnock has repeatedly praised Watmore’s attitude and performances since the forward’s move to Boro and says the club will offer him a new deal.

“We haven’t agreed financially but I’ve already told him I’m going to take him on if he wants to,” replied Warnock when asked about Watmore’s contract situation.

“I think he fits the club and the club fits him, he gets on really well with the lads and I think I can get the best out of him.”
