Watmore, who joined Boro on a short-team deal until January last month, scored twice as Boro got back to winning ways at the Riverside.

The Teessiders defended excellently in the closing stages after Yan Dhanda pulled one back for the visitors 13 minutes from time.

When asked about Watmore after the match, Warnock said: “He's a gem of a lad.

“He's come in, we didn't pay him for a few weeks. He got good offers financially to go away to all sorts of places.

“But he loved it here. It was great to give him a short-term deal.

“There's probably only him in our team that would have scored the goal. It's not easy going through like that.

“All credit to him, I thought he worked his socks off.”

When asked if Watmore is likely to receive an extension to his contract in January, Warnock added: “It's only one game. Let's wait and see a little bit.

“He was the type of player we were looking at, that's why I asked about him. We haven't got anyone like that.

“We're looking for good wide players, in his case he can play up front as well. He gives us a bit of both. He's responsible, he works hard, in training he covers more ground than anyone else.

“He deserves tonight, we gave him a round of applause in the dressing room. He deserves it for what he's been through, the horrendous injuries he's been through.

“He'll go home and he'll be on cloud nine tonight.”

Despite the late pressure, Warnock felt his side deserved the win.

"I just said to them they're a good side Swansea, a very good side, but we were better tonight,” Warnock added.

“It just shows how far we've come and where we can go.

“It was enjoyable. You could see at half-time how much they were enjoying it. It was just a case of trying to stay concentrated at the back because they're so cute with the one-twos.

“The deflected goal was disappointing but even after that we defended our goal really well.”
