Neil Warnock believes Middlesbrough full-back Djed Spence has all the tools to reach the very top but isn’t sure if the 20-year-old will fulfil his potential.

It’s still less than a year since Spence made his league debut for Boro, yet some of his performances have caught the eye since then.

Earlier this month it was claimed several Premier League clubs are tracking the youngster, including Everton, Wolves and Newcastle.

Tottenham have also been credited with interest in Spence, yet Warnock has previously advised the player to stay put.

Ahead of this weekend’s trip to Brentford, Warnock was once again asked about Spence’s potential as well as recent speculation.

“You have to assess every opportunity that comes along in your career really, sometimes you don’t get two choices,” said Warnock.

"I would imagine it’s his agent that’s putting all this in the paper.”

Spence has made nine league appearances for Boro this season, and scored in the 2-0 win over Coventry, but did drop out of the side after a disappointing performance at QPR.

Warnock was also asked if the full-back has taken on board what the manager wants from him.

“Up to a point but I think there’s so much more he can do,” replied the Boro boss.

“There are not many players where you can say it’s all up to themselves personally how far they go.

"He could go anywhere, he could be playing for the top club in England or he could be non-league in five years. I don’t know.

“Application, dedication, all these things come into it, he’s got the tools there’s no doubt about that.”
