Boro fans may feel they are well stocked in central midfield, yet the departure of Adam Clayton has left them a man lighter in the middle of the park. Here are nine midfielders who are currently available on free transfers – scroll down and flick through our gallery to see them:
5. Sam Hutchinson
Boro fans will probably say they need more attack-minded midfielders, yet Hutchinson's versatility could prove useful. The 31-year-old can play as a holding midfielder or as a centre-back and was a popular figure during his six years at Sheffield Wednesday. Photo: Nigel Roddis
6. Tom Carroll
It's not entirely clear what happened to Carroll after he was released by Swansea in January. The 28-year-old definitely had ability and always looked good on the ball, yet his career seems to have fizzled out. Photo: Harry Trump
7. Kevin Stewart
The former Liverpool man was a key player for Hull until November last year when he broke his foot and was forced to miss three months of the season. When he returned the Tigers were in free fall. and released several players following relegation to League One. Photo: David Rogers
8. Kamohelo Mokotjo
Played regularly for Brentford at the start of last season but fell down the pecking order in the second half of the campaign. Another player who is good on the ball and can plug gaps in the middle of the park. "Kamo has been superb for us over three years and now has the opportunity to take on a new challenge," said Bees boss Thomas Frank after the 29-year-old was released. Photo: James Chance
