'Sad state of affairs': What Middlesbrough fans are saying about Jonathan Woodgate and Leeds United defeat

Middlesbrough slipped to the cusp of the Championship relegation zone following a 1-0 defeat to Leeds United at the Riverside – and fans were quick to react.

Only goal difference is keeping Boro out of the bottom three following a run of nine Championship games without a win.

Mateusz Klich netted the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time and the visitors could have scored more if it wasn’t for a couple of sharp saves from Aynsley Pears.

With just 11 games to go, there is genuine concern that Boro could be demoted to League One next season, with more questions being asked about head coach Jonathan Woodgate.

Here’s how some fans reacted on social media:

@markarcher900: We all know Woodgate isn't going anywhere. Gibson is loyal to a fault and will happily bury his head in the sand and let this bloke take us down. To sack him would be an admission he got it wrong. If we go down it proves he got it wrong.

@Smithy_MFC84: This is awful. Really wanted it to work for JW, only last week I’m backing the bloke, but I’ve been massively spooked by seeing that league table tonight. I’m not naive, I knew we were close down there, but nobody envisaged this run of form, and that of those behind us.

@Strickland__Ben: Do fans really think a new manager would sort us out? They aren’t going to come in, swing a magic wand and send us on a 10 game winning streak. We’ve been crying out for stability for years, and now fans are wanting a short term fix such as Warnock?

@JonRiley1975: Coulson Pears Shotton Howson the only lads to come away with any credit. First half ok until Friend made that mistake for the goal

@tom_mcgarry17: With Woodgate in charge I do not know where the next win is coming from The reality is that Steve Gibson has got this one wrong & the appointment has been a failure. Settling for a mid table finish would’ve been a success but L1 is unacceptable Experience is required now

@brucierioch: I once said JW was out of his depth before he was appointed. Sad state of affairs at #boro at moment. Change is needed desperately or you know whats coming next if nothing changes. Its absolutely sickening watching your beloved club just implode

@Matt_Rowney: Woodgate mate we had 1 shot on target and got played off the park!?!?! Cant defend you anymore now. He sounds like a lost manager who's ran out of excuses and doesn’t have the answers! Madness!

@twentyandtwo: I’d say Woodgate out, as the man’s clearly well out of his depth. But the problems run much, much deeper than just the manager. The club are in free fall to league 1

@mattywinspear1: Lack of creativity is unbelievable, Leeds got forward and every player knew where to go where to run, we got the ball n players where at a stand still, absolutely awful

@AppleAndy82: Absolutely deflated after that...... sleepwalking to relegation......
