The 29-year-old midfielder had multiple offers from Championship clubs following the Latics’ relegation to League One but opted to sign a three-year deal at the Riverside.

“It’s great to be here, I’m really excited to get going,” Morsy told the club’s website.

“I think the club had been tracking me for a while, but it happened quite quickly in the end.

“I think the manager was the tipping point for me. He’s got a reputation for getting teams promoted, his last promotion was recent as well. His history and his record of eating teams out of this division and that was a big attraction for me.”

Morsy, who has been capped seven times by Egypt, was club captain at Wigan and believes he can add more experience to the Boro dressing room.

“I was captain at Wigan for a number of years and captain at Chesterfield for a number of years as well, so I’ve always had that leadership role,” Morsy added.

“I’ll continue to do that, support Britt (Assombalonga) and all the other players as well - the more leaders you have in a dressing room the better.

“I like to get on the ball, try to get the attacking players on it, and defensively I’m probably known best for breaking up play as well. Just keeping the team ticking over.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for me, hopefully I can settle in quickly and hit the ground running, and show the fans the best side of me.”
