Boro fans were quick to react to the news on social media – here are some of the responses.

@tjsigsworth: Just as we've all called out poor transfer practices from Boro over the past few years, we should equally praise them for that sell-on fee, even if it is a fairly basic expectation to have of modern clubs. A sign of positive change from Bausor and co.?

@RRichardsonyt: Martin Braithwaite has just signed for Barcelona. Adama Traore is Tearing the Premier league to bits. Martin De Roon is beating Valencia in the champions league. Stuani Scoring goals for fun in Spain. Jordan Hugill having a worldie season at QPR. Typical really.

@Smithy_MFC84: This is absolute madness, everything about this transfer is bonkers. The ruling that allowed the deal to go ahead, the fact they went with Braithwaite and his release clause being what it is. Definitely up there on ‘Things least likely to happen - 2020’ is this.

@boroweasel: Sell on clause. We actually did something right for once. I for one welcome Braithwaite at Barca and wish him luck

@harilaou1: This must be the end of the discussion on Braithwaite's time at Boro. That the club saw fit to insert a sell-on clause is in itself an admission of his ability. Ability Tony Pulis was blind to utilise. And: if up to €4m comes in then Braithwaite has ultimately been good for Boro

@GraingerNeil: What a hilarious signing this is and we’ll be laughing all the way to the bank

@JordanEvans1707: Braithwaite going to #Barcelona means that #Boro could be set for a financial boost Don’t mind if I do. Straight into funds for the summer. He was useful after all

@Saq5000: I bet he never would have thought he would end up there in a million years.
