With less money to spend due to the coronavirus pandemic, negotiations have become harder when attempting to bring in new players ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.
Here, we take a closer look at some of the deals which have caught the eye in the second tier so far this summer, and how some of Middlesbrough’s rivals are shaping-up:
5. Steven Fletcher (Sheffield Wednesday to Stoke, free transfer)
Now 33, Fletcher has shown he can still be a handful in the Championship after scoring 13 goals in 27 league appearances for Sheffield Wednesday last season. The Scottish frontman saw his contract at Hillsborough expire in June and has now joined Stoke, where he'll provide competition for the likes of Sam Vokes, Lee Gregory and Tyrese Campbell. 6. Korey Smith (Bristol City to Swansea, free transfer)
A player who was reportedly on Boro's radar after his contract at Bristol City expired. The 29-year-old spent six years at Ashton Gate but has now joined Swansea City, a move which should suit the midfielder's style of play. Photo: Harry Trump
7. Lyle Taylor (Charlton to Nottingham Forest, free transfer)
After publicly saying he wouldn't play Charlton's remaining games when his contract expired last season, Taylor, 30, has finally got a move to Nottingham Forest. The striker stepped up and impressed in the Championship last term, but there will be more expectations at the City Ground. Photo: Julian Finney
8. Troy Parrott (Tottenham to Millwall, loan)
The highly-rated youngster made his Tottenham debut last season but will hope to receive more game time after signing a season-long loan deal at Millwall. Still only 18, many will be keeping an eye on the Irish striker. Photo: Julian Finney
