The 62-year-old has been out of work for 18 month after leaving the Riverside in 2019.

Pulis still reflects fondly on his time on Teesside working under chairman Steve Gibson, even if things didn’t quite work out.

“I had some good time out. Being at Boro was difficult in terms of the commuting. Steve was fabulous with me in lots of ways.

He added: “I’m walking straight in and I want to get this team going. You know the story at Boro and we had to sell players. We had to look after the finances.”

Dijksteel reacts to new deal

Back at the Riverside, defender Anfernee Dijksteel has signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract with Boro.

The 24-year-old has started every minute of every league game for the Teessiders this season, after recovering from a lengthy knee injury last term.

"There's been a lot of change since Neil Warnock came in," Dijksteel told Boro’s website "I've been working hard and he's been trusting me.

"I didn't expect to play last season after my injury, but he showed faith in me, and gave me an opportunity to be part of the team again.”

Former striker criticises Southgate

Finally, former Boro striker Mido says England should sack Gareth Southgate.

The Egyptian, now 37, signed for the Teessiders in 2007 and was part of the team which was relegated from the Premier League under Southgate.

And Mido clearly didn’t think much of his manager at Boro, who has since gone on to manage the England national team.

Following England’s 2-0 Nations League defeat in Belgium on Sunday, Mido tweeted: "England needs a proper manager... they are wasting their time with Southgate.

"I remember him at boro. He was scared to death when we were fighting relegation. True it was his first job but these things never change!! If you are (sic) scared from losing a football match you will always be scared from losing a football match!! And players can always feel it!!
