The Austrian stopper signed for the Teessiders last January but has made just eight league appearances since arriving from Swiss side St Gallen.

After making his debut in last season’s 1-0 win at Charlton, Stojanovic started six consecutive games for Boro as football resumed following the first national lockdown in June.

Yet the 27-year-old has made just one appearance this campaign, in August’s EFL Cup win over Shrewsbury, with Marcus Bettinelli starting every league since arriving on loan from Fulham.

Stojanovic was replaced on the bench by Sol Brynn during Saturday’s 3-1 win at Wycombe.

FC St Pauli are second bottom of 2. Bundesliga and have won just one game all season.

Stojanovic told the club’s website: “I was delighted to hear of St. Pauli’s interest in me and am happy to be here and have an opportunity to help the team.

“We have to escape from this difficult situation as soon as possible to get out of the drop zone, and I’ll do my utmost on the pitch to achieve that.”

St Pauli head coach Timo Schultz said: “Dejan has been in the situation we find ourselves in several times during his career.

“It was also important for me that any new signings don’t need much time to settle in, so the fact that Dejan is Austrian and will be able to communicate with everyone straightaway will help, of course.”
