The 28-year-old has been a free agent since his contract at Cardiff was terminated in September and Boro boss Neil Warnock has admitted it will take a couple of weeks before the player is match fit.

Still, Warnock was keen to bolster his attacking options for the second half of the campaign and knows Mendez-Laing well from their time together at Cardiff.

The winger was part of the Bluebirds side which won Championship promotion under Warnock in 2018, when he made 38 league appearances.

“I know Mendez well and he’ll give us an added dimension,” Warnock told Boro’s website. “It’ll be couple of weeks before he’s match fit but it’ll be great to have him for this run-in now.

“We have been short of wide players and he is a player with something to prove. We’re looking forward to having him here.”
