Middlesbrough missed the chance to put pressure on teams around them as they were beaten 3-1 by Bristol City at the Riverside.

After an excellent away 2-0 win at Reading, Neil Warnock’s side were made to pay for defensive mistakes against the Robins and found themselves three goals down before half-time.

Bristol City striker Famara Diedhiou was linked with a move to Boro in January and caused all sorts of problems against the Teessiders.

The 28-year-old netted a 12-minute brace before strike partner Nahki Wells added a third before the interval.

Boro threw men forward in the second half and managed to pull a goal back when Dael Fry bundled the ball home ten minutes from time – his first of the season.

It was far too little too late, though, as Boro remained three points off the top six ahead of this weekend’s meeting with Cardiff City.
