The 25-year-old impressed during a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday last term and has been on the fringes of Newcastle’s first team since joining the Magpies from Norwich in 2017.

Wednesday are interested in re-signing Murphy this summer, while Boro, Nottingham Forest and Stoke have all been credited with interest.

Yet the winger has impressed since returning to Tyneside and scored in Newcastle’s 2-1 friendly win over Barnsley on Saturday.

Magpies boss Steve Bruce has said he’ll assess Murphy’s situation over the next few weeks, while assistant Steve Agnew, formerly of Boro, has heaped praise on the player.

"He has genuine pace,” said Agnew after the Barnsley game. "Confidence is the key word.”

"He also added goals to his game in the Championship and finished with nine in a successful loan period.

"He's certainly taken the manager's eye in this short pre-season so we will keep on with Jacob to get on with his work.

"I'm sure he will be around it this season."

Boro were also linked with a couple of goalkeepers over the weekend as reports resurfaced regarding Charlton stopper Dillon Phillips.

The 25-year-old will be out of contract next summer but it seems the Addicks are reluctant to let him leave, despite interest from Championship clubs.

It’s also been claimed by the Sun that Boro are tracking Fulham keeper Marcus Bettinelli.
