Middlesbrough endured an afternoon to forget as the Championship resumed on Saturday – and supporters were quick to make their feelings known following a 3-0 defeat by Swansea.

The visitors took a three-goal lead inside 34 minutes after two goals from Rhian Brewster and an Andre Ayew penalty at the Riverside.

No fans were allowed into the stadium due to coronavirus protocols, yet many watched the match online through the club’s video stream.

As expected, supporters weren’t impressed by a woeful first-half display, while questions were asked about Jonathan Woodgate’s team selection.

Here are some of the responses from social media.

@JaySnowballs23: Woodgate has been Boro manager for a year and I honestly believe he still has no idea what his strongest XI is if everybody is fit.

@TerryBywater07: Well I'm done I'm so angry right now. Woodgate .... ‘I thought Rudy was great against Charlton and that's why I started him’ ??? Really, that was months ago and the only time all season he has performed and that puts your top scorer and main man on the bench?

@YusufBoroFan: Stats can be so misleading. This is perfect evidence. More shots, more possession, more corners, more successful crosses and dribbles. But it was awful. Absolutely dreadful. Lacking pace, urgency, willingness to win.

@Smithy_MFC84: At this stage, to be outside the bottom three purely on goal difference, is indefensible. Our squad isn’t THAT bad. I had the faith only last week, but I seriously didn’t foresee a performance as inept as the one we saw today. No wins from the next two and it’s over for JW.

@samjthompson_: When’s it going to click with Woodgate that the reason we look better in training is because we play against ourselves. Our defenders are bad enough to make the strikers look good and the strikers are poor enough to make the defenders look solid.

@Gazstaton: Only 2 good things from watching @Boro today, Patrick Roberts cameo and the quality of the stream apart from that we look down and out.

@paulmetz: Woeful... Best two players on the pitch were the subs Spence and Roberts.. Terrible team selection, terrible performance

@paulistapark: Testing times for #Boro who were sunk without trace as the goals flew in. Woodgate cut an isolated figure and unless we wash our hands of him we lockdown and out

@Matt_Rowney: We’re one of the first games back in both of England's top leagues. Probably more eyes and ears on our game because of the lack of football, and we produce this. Anyone else a little bit embarrassed?

@kelbelhartley: Remember when as #boro fans we laughed at #sunderland for their abysmal performances and league 1 status... that's karma for us

@JohnHammett3: Sat here wondering why I forked out £420 on a season ticket renewal @Boro. I can count on one hand how many games I have enjoyed over the last 2 years
