When Middlesbrough, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, West Brom and Championship rivals could play postponed fixtures after Coronavirus outbreak

The outbreak of COVID-19 has seen all professional football in the UK postponed until the beginning of next month at the earliest – but what are the potential options for the remainder of the season?

Boro and their league rivals have nine games still to be played, yet a minimum of three Championship game weeks will have to be rescheduled.

No Premier League or EFL games will take place until Friday, April 3 at the earliest, with Boro set to host QPR the following day.

Jonathan Woodgate’s side were scheduled to face Swansea at the Riverside this weekend before trips to Stoke and Hull on Wednesday, March 18 and Saturday, March 21 respectively, yet those games have now been suspended.

The postponement of those fixtures as well as other EFL and Premier League matches will pose an unprecedented problem – even if the season does resume on April 3, which is far from guaranteed.

With the final day of the regular Championship season originally planned for Saturday, May 2, that would leave less than a month to complete nine league fixtures.

The chances of that happening seem extremely unlikely, especially due to a higher volume of games over the Easter period.

After the QPR fixture, Boro are scheduled to face Millwall six days later on Friday, April 10 before a home game against Bristol City on Monday, April 13.

It would then be another quick turnaround with an away game at Reading pencilled in for Saturday, April 18.

Other Championship clubs face similar schedules meaning it would be unrealistic to arrange extra games during that time.

When you factor in the additional FA Cup and European games which need to be rearranged, it would probably take around six weeks to complete the domestic calendar.

It does appear possible to reschedule a round of fixtures in midweek from Monday April 27, yet it seems inevitable the 2019/20 campaign will have to be pushed back or reduced.

Dates for the Championship play-offs hadn’t been confirmed but usually take place a week after the season has finished, with the final scheduled for Monday, May 25.

Another glaring issue is this year’s European Championships which were set to start on Friday June 12.

International fixtures which were scheduled for later this month have already been cancelled, while Euro 2020 qualifiers are also expected to be suspended.

There is a chance the whole tournament could be postponed which would allow more time for domestic leagues to complete their seasons.

Following the suspension of the Champions League and Europa League, all domestic and international competitions, including EURO 2020, will be discussed at a UEFA board meeting on Tuesday.

If further games are suspended, there is a possibility the season would be declared void and start again in August.

Current positions could be used to decide promotion, relegation or play-off positions, yet all these scenarios would prove controversial.

There is also a strong chance the start of next season could be delayed if fixtures are pushed back until the summer.
