The 26-year-old will be out of contract this summer, despite talks over a new deal at The Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

We take a closer look at the situation.

Last week QPR boss Mark Warburton said he and Lumley “had words” but that talks were still “ongoing” over a new contract.

“We had a few words behind closed doors and what was said remains behind closed doors,” said Warburton.

“There are talks ongoing and I have said before that Joe is a man that I have enormous respect for as a goalkeeper and as a person.

“We had a few words and I made the decision I made.

“But the fact is I have amazing respect for Joe Lumley He is a top-class goalkeeper and talks are ongoing and let’s see what happens in the coming days.”

It has since been claimed that Boro are plotting a move to sign Lumley on a free transfer, with Football Insider reporting the Teessiders are looking to take advantage of the stopper’s situation.

The keeper was also linked with Nottingham Forest in January.

How has he fared this season?

Lumley started QPR’s first two Championship games this season but lost his place to Seny Dieng after a 3-2 defeat at Coventry.

The keeper was then sent out on an emergency loan deal to Doncaster in November and stayed at the League One club until January, after making eight appearances for Rovers.

Lumley has been at QPR since 2013 and was the club’s first-choice goalkeeper during the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns.

He impressed after coming off the bench in Rangers’ 2-1 win over Boro in April, after Dieng was sent off at the Riverside.

What are the chances of Boro signing him?

Boro’s interest is unclear, yet the Teessiders could be looking for two new goalkeepers this summer.

Lumley probably hasn’t shown the consistency to be a reliable No 1 at the Riverside but is a very capable back-up option.

Whether he would be willing to move and be second choice is questionable, yet it depends on who else Boro have their eye on.

If he’s available on a free transfer, Lumley is certainly worth considering.
