Middlesbrough stepped up their preparations for the 2020/21 campaign with a 5-1 win over Newcastle in a training game at Rockliffe.

Neil Warnock gave minutes to 17 players and started with what looked like his strongest starting XI before making changes in the second half.

Britt Assombalonga scored twice before Marcus Tavernier made it 3-0 in the first half.

Djed Spence, Anfernee Dijksteel, Lewis Wing, Grant Hall and Jonny Howson also started for the hosts.

Newcastle first-teamers Matt Ritchie, DeAndre Yedlin, Jacob Murphy, Jamaal Lascelles and Allan Saint-Maximin all featured for the Magpies, and the latter pulled a goal back before half-time.

Warnock introduced Sam Folarin, Ben Liddle, Sam Stubbs and Stephen Walker at the break, while Marcus Browne and Marc Bola also received a run out.

Both sides were reduced to ten men when Wing and Lascelles were dismissed shortly after the interval.

A Hall header and Walker penalty completed the scoring for the Teessiders.
